Day 2 & 3
I woke up on the second morning to the beautiful sight of a cockroach crawling near my bed! I squealed like a little girl, however my private exterminator took care of business immediately.
Our bags have arrived at the airport (I think?). There are no addresses or telephone numbers on the invoice, so we just chanced it. They were there! – of course they were impossible to claim until we paid a “handling fee” to three different locals that helped get them out of customs and carry them to our car. Nevertheless, it’s worth it cause I finally got to brush my teeth!
For the rest of the day we toured the island. The Island - only 22 kms long, yet takes 1 hour to get to the other side. Driving is terrifying, especially since Day 2 when we witnessed the complimentary car crash on the way to the beach. The car was coming off a huge steep hill, and at the bottom went right through the stop sign, and crashed right into the concrete wall. Fortunately, the girl driver way okay – that’s more than I can say about myself that day. I think Ben will take appreciation to granny driving from this day forward.
Day three we had to get groceries again. This time, we went to the more “local” store – just as I got out of the car, Ben asked me to turn my engagement ring inside my hand :o) After a $100 spree for basics groceries – mac n’ cheese, veggies and fruits, we started a list for mom and dad: “please bring the following items which we refuse to buy here…men’s speedstick $8, 1 chocolate bar $5, body wash $10!” Booze on the other hand is a different story. Our 750 mL bottle of Appleton’s run was $8, but the Coca-Cola mix is $3.50 for a 2L bottle! If we want to save money, Ben’s gonna have to learn to drink that stuff straight…
Finally, I started working on my tan – I’m hoping that by the time our friends come and visit us, they wont recognize me :o)
Tomorrow we are gonna try to unlock our Canadian cell phones so we can use them here, open a bank account, and meet my employer, oh and hit the beach again!
