Monday – Yay, its move out day!
The first thing that comes to my mind, is go to the grocery store, buy food and finally stock up the fridge! We arrived very late after work to our new house and the land lady was setting up the furniture which had literally just arrived from San Juan and was stil wet from the boat it arrived on!
As soon as we unpacked we needed to get to business –
Step 1) exterminate the premises! It took us 4 hours of sweat labour to get rid of all the bugs in the house.
Step 2) get the Cable to work. The rumor on the island is that the cable company on the island is stealing cable from some of the larger islands in the Caribbean. Therefore, its really easy to go to the electronic store and buy a chipped cable box – which is what we did (Basically free cable with every single channel). We came home, hooked it up and we were disappointed upon the sight of a blue screen. We called the electronics store, and they explained to us that because our home is brand new it may not be wired for cable TV. Our land lady clarified that the house is definitely wired for cable, but we would have to call the cable company and purchase a plan which would activate the cable TV box. We obviously didn’t want to do that and she didn’t know that we had one of those boxes. Anyway, we complained for a couple of days that we don’t think the cable is installed. Within 24 hours she had the cable company in our house installing cable! The cable guy came, hooked up our illegal box, mentioned to the landlady "Wow they have every channel", didn’t charge us a penny, and left with no questions asked! Haha – that would never fly at home!
The bed was so comfy, but we can’t sleep! Dundee has been flying to Houston today and we are anxious of his safe arrival….
Tuesday –
Today was Christmas day for us! We left work at 3pm, and drive to the airport. The night before, Jeff, our FlyBVI pilot confirmed that he was going to be operating the 9 person airplane and he was going to give us a complimentary upgrade. Jeff few us in our private airplane to San Juan, Puerto Rico. A van with an airport staff guy named Manual met us upon arrival in San Juan. Jeff our pilot had arranged everything with Manual! Within minutes, we cleared customs, provided Manual with our id’s, went back to the airplane, and a few minutes later Manual arrived back to the airplane – this time with a dog crate in his van! The back door of the van was opened and we saw our poor confused Dundee. His food was all over the cage, and his water bowl had fallen off. We could tell that as soon as her heard our voice he knew everything was going to be okay. Other than some mild dehydration – our little senior pup made it across the continent in wonderful health! We quickly let him out of the cage and showered him with hugs and kisses just before we placed him in our airplane. He was treated to complimentary bottles of water on the aircraft which he enjoyed quickly. When we took off, and Dundee almost immediately fell asleep.
Our piolot mentioned on the way back that we just missed Beyonce! He had chartered her a flight in to Tortola from Peurto Rico and just flew her back the previous day. She even gave him a kiss on the cheek after landing. Ben now wants to become a pilot with this airline!!!
As soon as we arrived in Tortola, we quickly snuck Dundee back in his cage to avoid our import being rejected by the government authorities.
Dundee was greeted by the main government vet on the island. The vet quickly ascertained that Dundee, an “Elkhound cross” in his official medical papers looks more like a Rottie in real life. Apparently, that wasn’t too much of a problem, and Dundee smoothly cleared customs in Tortola.
There aren’t many local pet lovers on the island. Usually, when tourists arrive to the island, as soon as they pick up their luggage and leave the airport they are hounded by taxi companies offering rides into town. When we came out of the airport, we let Dundee out of his crate to allow him to stretch, and all the local taxi people disappeared in a blink of an eye! Many people are scared of dogs, including our land lady. What many people may not know is that Dundee is one of the few larger dogs on the island!
